Well, I received my reply from Meridian (woohoo! My first response from a Wolfpacker!). I guess I'll eat my small can of crow, though, because my interpretation was wrong... but not too wrong (hence the small can, hehe).
Here's his reply:

Well, I figure that before the Turning the Huntresses and Furies were not necessarily the limit of Amazon culture - they could have easily had their Rogues, and Warriors, and perhaps even a Priest or two (just no priests of the All-Father though). These were porbably SEVERE minorities in the grand scheme of things, but they were born in Delgana and pledged to its queen, so yeah, they were technically Amazons. They probably never got the same respect that a Huntress or Fury did, but that's a different matter. Bear in mind also that these non-Huntress and Furies had to be women to gain any social status at all.

As for Guild affiliations and the carrot and the stick, I gave a very complete (if somewhat grumpy) response to Kestra when she accused WP of discriminating against women. Basically, we've opted for the reward over the hard-coded restriction, figuring that those most likely to break the fiction won't now, because there's a slightly quicker path to power if they follow the paths of less resistance.
