Meridian: His Job

Meridian: His Job

Original: Hello, I am currently a Junior in High School, and one day I'd like to have Meridian's job. Well, perhaps not Meridian's exact job (It would be quite difficult to put such a skillful writer as him out of a job), but I would like to be a writer for a game where I could create the game's world in words and then watch it actually take form through the actions of the 3D artists and programmers. My main problem is that I have absolutely no idea what I would major in to have a chance at Meridian's job, or what colleges are good at it. I would have prefered to e-mail this directly to Meridian, but as I have no idea what his e-mail address would be I am posting here for the world to see, and hopefully for Ashen to bug Meridian until he says what kind of schooling he would reccommend. Thanks in advance,

Alakath Di'Equinar

Answer: Dude, if you'd have asked me even five years ago, I wouldn't have thought that jobs like mine actually existed, outside the realm of Pen and Paper RPGs, where job security is low and pay is often even less.

I double majored in History and Archaeology in college, along with enough English coursework taken pass-fail to comprise a third major (if only they'd have let me count it!). I've also been an avid PnP gamer since 1980. The reading and research I lavished on that habit laid a good foundation for my work today. In terms of which colleges are good for my sort of education, I really couldn't tell you - costs pretty much dictated my college choice. Make sure they have good libraries.

If you want to be a writer, read, read, and read, and then write. A lot. Then read some more. Read it all, good or bad.

As regards a previous question: no, I don't have any published fiction out there. Not yet, anyway...

There are some old PnP game supplements and adventures I've either written or contributed to, but that's about it. Not the same sort of stuff, really.
