Irekei: Language

Irekei: Language

Original Post: Then what do the Irekei call themselves in their own language? I suppose that you could claim that the Irekei pride themselves in being outcasts and have kept the name, but then again, we're told that the Irekei claim no kinship with the elves, so why would they use a word for themselves that indicates that they were cast out of the elves?

Also, is fir'khanim singular, plural, or both? In this quote it is defined as a singular: "When dealing with fir'khanim (literally "rain bleeder," a derogatory term for any being weak enough to waste water through sweat)..." In this quote, it is used as a plural: "Only fir'khanim are kept as slaves..."And in this quote we are given one of the ways that the Irekei form plurals: "Most tribes (the Irekei plural is Virakt'al)..." Should it be something like "fir'khanim'al" in the plural form? Or, as I asked above, is it both?

Meridian answered: Hey! Actually, this is Meridian riding on Ashton Kai's login coattails. I haven't really had much space or time to devote to the Irekei language, but I can tell you this: they call themselves Irekei. In the language they created after parting ways with the Elves, it means something very different (you'll find out what when we post the Irekei Lore section). As regards linguistics and the Rain Bleeders, fir'khanim is indeed a collective term, same singular as it is plural. There is 'al' which does denote plurals in their language, but there's one more layer on top of that. The way I imagine it, the Irekei language uses a different set of endings depending upon whether or not one is referring to Irekei or non-Irekei. Their xenophobia and superiority complex to translate over into every aspect of their culture, even their language. Just some thoughts.
